Re: Our farm system

In my post, I was responding to the question regarding scouting. I agree that the farm system problems are a combination of those factors mentioned by Barzilla, in addition to the scouting issue. I do...

Re: Our farm system

I think it says something about where the Astros' farm system is at, both past and future, when you see that 4 of the top 10 were drafted last summer. The fact that the Astros' best hitter for average...

Re: Our farm system

What would be more interesting is to see how many of those top ten guys would make the top ten in most other organizations. I'm sure Castro would, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Re: Our farm system

I know I'm wasting my breath here, but it seems to me that a team could do quite well by simply budgeting an additional ten million dollars each season on the draft. Instead of signing mediocre free...

Is this penny-pinching/poor decision-making coming straight from the top? Or was it just unfortunate sloppiness all down the line?

I agree with what Barz said above. I'd accept an $80 million payroll if we were top 5 in spending on acquiring young talent (the draft, foreign free agency period, etc.). To me, you're much better off...

Zac, Competing and building for the future is not mutually exclusive. In fact, the Astros did both last year. The point is that having a good farm system is always a good long-term investment.
